New York child support calculator
New York uses the Child Support Standards Act (CSSA): it combines both parents’ income (after Social Security and Medicare), applies a flat percentage set by the number of children — 17% / 25% / 29% / 31% / no less than 35% — to combined income up to the $193,000 cap, and the paying parent owes their pro-rata share, protected by a self-support reserve. This calculator follows that method and shows every step, citing DRL § 240(1-b) and the 2026 Child Support Standards Chart.
Calculate guideline support
Enter both parents’ annual gross income. Add annual child care and the children’s health-insurance cost if any. Parenting-time overnights are optional.

The percentages and the $193,000 cap
New York does not use a lookup table. It applies a single percentage of combined income set only by the number of children: 17% for one child, 25% for two, 29% for three, 31% for four, and no less than 35% for five or more. That percentage is applied to combined income up to the statutory cap, which for orders on or after March 1, 2026 is $193,000.
Above $193,000 the law permits but does not require the court to apply the percentage to the excess or to weigh ten statutory factors, so this calculator applies the percentage only up to the cap and flags the excess as discretionary.

Pro-rata shares and add-ons
The basic obligation is divided between the parents in proportion to their incomes — if the noncustodial parent earns 60% of the combined income, they pay 60% of the basic amount. On top of that, the CSSA prorates mandatory add-ons the same way: reasonable work-related child care, the child’s health-insurance premium, and unreimbursed medical costs (and, in the court’s discretion, educational expenses). This calculator prorates the child-care and health figures you enter.
DRL § 240(1-b)(c)(4)–(7).
The self-support reserve — and why overnights usually don’t count
Two floors protect a low-income payer. If paying the formula amount would drop the noncustodial parent below the self-support reserve ($21,546 in 2026), the order is reduced. Between the reserve and the poverty line ($15,960) the order is $50 a month; at or below the poverty line it can be $25 a month.
Unlike most states, New York does not give the paying parent a routine reduction for parenting time or overnights. The parent with the children the majority of the time is the “custodial” parent and receives support; only genuine 50/50 or split-custody arrangements change who pays. That is why this calculator has no overnights field.

What this calculator does not do
It computes the core CSSA figure — combined income, the percentage, the pro-rata share, the self-support and poverty floors, and prorated child-care/health add-ons. It does not subtract NYC or Yonkers income tax, maintenance paid, or support for other children from income; it does not decide the above-cap amount; and it does not handle 50/50 or split custody, imputed income, or a court’s discretionary variance. For a figure you can file, use the New York child-support worksheet or consult an attorney.
Common questions
How is child support calculated in New York?
Combine both parents’ income after Social Security and Medicare, apply the CSSA percentage for the number of children (17/25/29/31% for one to four, no less than 35% for five or more) to combined income up to the 2026 cap of $193,000, and the noncustodial parent pays their pro-rata share plus a share of child care and health costs. It’s a rebuttable presumption.
What is the New York child support cap in 2026?
$193,000 of combined parental income for orders on or after March 1, 2026. Above it, a court may but need not apply the percentage to the excess or weigh the statutory factors.
What is the self-support reserve?
The 2026 self-support reserve is $21,546. An order can’t push the payer below it; between the poverty line ($15,960) and the reserve the order is $50/month, and at or below poverty it can be $25/month.
Does parenting time reduce child support in New York?
Generally no. New York doesn’t give a routine overnight credit; the majority-time parent is custodial and receives support. Only true 50/50 or split custody changes who pays.
Is child support taxable in New York?
No — federally it’s not taxable to the recipient or deductible by the payer, the same in New York as everywhere.
