Child support · Connecticut

Connecticut child support calculator

Connecticut uses the income-shares model: both parents’ net weekly income is combined, the basic obligation is read from the Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations, child care and health insurance are added, and the total is split in proportion to income. This calculator applies the Connecticut Child Support Guidelines and shows every step.

§ 1 · The instrument

Educational estimate — not legal advice. The guideline amount is a rebuttable presumption; a court sets the actual order and may deviate from it (§46b-215a).
    § 2

    The income-shares model

Connecticut follows the income-shares model. The idea is that a child should receive the same proportion of parental income they would have if the parents lived together. Both parents’ net weekly income is combined, the basic support obligation is read from the schedule, and each parent is responsible for the share that matches their percentage of the combined income. The parent the children do not primarily live with pays their share to the other.

    § 3

    The schedule of basic obligations

The heart of the calculation is the Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations — a table indexed by combined net weekly income (from $50 up to $4,000 per week) and the number of children (one to six). This calculator uses the current schedule, which took effect July 1, 2015. Combined income is rounded to the nearest $10 row.

    § 4

Child care, health insurance and the reserve

To the basic obligation Connecticut adds qualifying child care and the children’s health-insurance premium, which are shared in proportion to income and computed on the worksheet. The combined figure is the total obligation, split by income share. A self-support reserve protects low-income paying parents, and above $4,000 net weekly the presumptive amount becomes a range set with court discretion.

    § 5

    Shared parenting and deviations

Connecticut does not use a separate shared-custody worksheet, but shared physical custody is one of the enumerated deviation criteria a court may apply to adjust the presumptive amount (§46b-215a-5c). This calculator computes the standard presumptive obligation; a court may deviate for shared parenting and the other statutory criteria.

    § 6

What this calculator does not do

It combines both parents’ income, reads the guideline schedule, adds child care and health insurance, and splits the total by income share. It does not compute net income from your pay stubs, run the full health-care/child-care contribution worksheet, apply the self-support reserve in detail, or apply a deviation the court may order. For a figure you can file, use the official Connecticut worksheet or consult an attorney.

    Common questions

How is child support calculated in Connecticut?

Combine both parents’ net weekly income, read the basic obligation from the Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations, add qualifying child care and health insurance, and split the total in proportion to income. The parent the children do not live with pays their share.

What is the Connecticut child support schedule?

The Schedule of Basic Child Support Obligations — a table indexed by combined net weekly income ($50 to $4,000/wk) and one to six children. The current schedule took effect July 1, 2015.

    What happens above $4,000/week?

The presumptive support ranges from the dollar amount at the $4,000 level up to the percentage shown at that level applied to the combined income, set with court discretion.

    What about shared custody?

Connecticut treats shared physical custody as a deviation criterion (§46b-215a-5c) a court may apply to adjust the presumptive amount, rather than a separate worksheet.

Is child support taxable in Connecticut?

No — federally it’s not taxable to the recipient or deductible by the payer, the same in Connecticut as everywhere.
