Arizona child support calculator

Arizona follows the income-shares model. The idea is that a child should receive the same proportion of parental income they would have if the parents lived together. Both parents’ Adjusted Child Support Income is combined, the basic support obligation is read from the schedule, and each parent is responsible for the share that matches their percentage of the combined income. The parent the children do not primarily live with pays their share, reduced by a parenting-time adjustment.

The heart of the calculation is the Schedule of Basic Support Obligation — a table indexed by combined Adjusted Child Support Income (from $750 up to $30,000 per month) and the number of children (one to six). This calculator uses the current schedule, which took effect January 1, 2022. Combined income is rounded to the nearest $50 row.

To the basic obligation Arizona adds the children’s medical, dental and vision insurance premium and child care costs, plus certain extraordinary expenses. The combined figure is the total obligation, split by income share. The paying parent’s share is then reduced by a parenting-time adjustment for the nights the children spend with them, and a self-support reserve protects low-income parents.

Arizona reduces the paying parent’s obligation by a parenting-time adjustment tied to the number of nights per year the children spend with them — the more nights, the larger the reduction, and near-equal time can nearly offset the two shares. Because that needs the exact night count, this calculator computes the obligation before the parenting-time adjustment and flags it.

It combines both parents’ income, reads the Schedule of Basic Support Obligation, adds child care and medical insurance, and splits the total by income share.
